The 30-days Raya festivities has been shortened with the Agro Working Group Meeting at Coron (26-31/July, 2015), slightly north of the Palawan island, Philippines. Coron still belong within the Palawan group of islands, which I believe has about 1700 islands. To all those who has not reached here, Coron is pollution free, the air is cool, no traffic jams, no hustle-bustle of the city as we move on our own village-pace. But the most compelling reasons as to why we came here is the clear pollution free water where corals thrive and snorkeling or diving has been made more interesting. Here, we are living like 50 years ago in old Philippines. You dont have to wait long to catch a fish and the seafood prices are awfully cheap. Hopefully the prices stay that way, otherwise they may tend to scare the tourist away.
I must thank the Philippines for deciding on Coron, because in BIMP-EAGA, we sure like to attend meetings in places where we have never been before. And I must also thank the presiding Chairman/HEAD of Delegation, Mr Parawan, who has made the meeting so interesting and stretching way beyond the 6:00pm target without us delegates feeling tiresome. The free-flow of coffee and tea helps
Very soon, Mr Parawan will take his leave of retirement (18th October, 2015). On behalf of the BEBC, we would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for his devotion and dedication towards the agri/agro industry. May his retirement be a more peaceful time for him to continue whatever he has always wanted to do, but never get to do. Thank you very much Mr Parawan.
The proceeding of the meeting has touched on many interesting agendas and i want to highlight those that deserve special attention:
Their minimum output is 8/10 mt per hectare and under close supervision, a 15 metric-tonne output has also been realized in North Luzon. I frown when states of countries refused to acknowledge this productivity. The BEBC is even willing to become the importing and distribution agent of these seeds. We hold a considered opinion that the farmers must not be deprived of higher output, thus higher income.
So far the Philippines corn production has been self sufficient and Indonesia is able to export their massive excesses. We are encouraging non producing countries to consider buying from Indonesia because of its close proximity. This will help in our connectivity programs.
ENHANCING THE COCONUT BASED INDUSTRIES
By attending the BE AGRI/AGRO meetings, we learn that there is 101 items we can make from coconut trees like baled coir fiber, coconet, biologs, coco peat and coco twines. Its application is enormous especially on erosion control, highway side-cuts and many many more. To countries who may have abandoned the coconut plantation, please give it another thought and consider inter-croppings.
PALM OIL PLANTATION
The trend now is to go for organic plantation and Governments are best to take remedial steps towards this direction. To all who wish to expand, there are plenty more lands available in Palawan and Mindanao and the BEBC is able to assist towards forging a fruitful expansion.
COOPERATION ON HALAL PROGRAM.
Knowledge sharing is the path to immortality. It is good to see a non-predominant Muslim country embarking on this program and much support and encouragement must be endorsed. BEBC would like to propose that this development should be accorded to the Bangsamoro/ARMM region to uplift their economic depression. In addition, BEBC would like the Phil Airport Authorities to initiate halal restaurants within their terminals. Even the absence of pork, does not constitute a halal meal. There is more to it. The beef and chicken must be halal compliance and the cooking and serving cutleries also must be halal compliance.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around for the better.
When there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character.
When there is beauty in the character, then there there will be harmony in the home.
When there is harmony in the home, then will be order in the nation.
When the nation is in order, there will be peace in the world.
DUCK REARING PROGRAM
Ducks has always remain obscure and so does its rearing. The meeting was given an insight into duck rearing and it is so very interesting and profitable too. It is the intention of this broadcast to encourage more and more to go into this business. The BEBC also feels that the Agricultural Ministries ought to be given more budget so that similar projects could be vigorously expanded.
Until then, see you soon. Please enjoy the read. Wassalam.
